Jon Negroni gives his instant take review of Anora, the newest film written and directed by Sean Baker. Mikey Madison stars in this genre-spinning, Palme d’Or winning drama-comedy about a young stripper swept up in a tumultuous romance with the son of a Russian oligarch. The cast also includes Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan, and Aleksei Serebryakov.

Bottom Line:

Sean Baker’s “This Americana Life” style of empathy filmmaking works better than most because his characters (and settings) are always balancing the lows and highs of people and places we can actually recognize.
